About the Area
Winchcombe dates to Neolithic times and in Anglo-Saxon times became a major centre for the Kings of Mercia. The town is situated in a beautiful Cotswold valley 9 miles from Broadway and some 8 miles from the Regency town of Cheltenham.
Winchcombe is a Cotswold town on the river Isbourne, where the local stone gives way to timbered houses and Inns, centuries old architecture and stunning countryside. Winchcombe is the home to Sudeley Castle, once the home and now the resting place of Catherine Parr, Queen of England and the sixth wife of Henry V111.
Winchcombe is surrounded by many delightful villages including Alderton, Teddington, Woolstone, Gotherington, Prescott, Middle Stanley, Stanley Pontlarge, Gretton, Greet, Guiting Power, Temple Guiting, Kineton, Hailes, Wood Stanway, Didbrook, Toddington and Bishops Cleeve.

Gotherington
Hayman-Joyce staff describe Gotherington as a charming and peaceful village with a mix of quaint cottages and high-quality new homes, but its main attraction is its location.
The village just five miles from junction 9 of the M5 lies midway between Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and Winchombe just off the main A435 road and on Gretton Lane, which is a lovely scenic drive and a must for cyclists. The village lies under Crane Hill, Woolstone Hill and Dixton Hill so a challenge for those fittest amongst us, walkers and rambler alike.
Gotherington was mentioned in the Doomsday Book, and when excavating for new builds there was evidence of Roman and Anglo-Saxon activity with a large collection of artefacts.
The village currently has a population of around 1200. The Shutters Inn lies at the centre of the village and the local shop Gotherington Stores doubles as a tearoom and Post Office. There is a Village Hall which hosts may events and is the home of the Parent and Toddler Group. There is a well-attended Primary School in the village with a children’s recreational ground. There are several clubs in the village, for walkers, wine lovers, gardeners, a community group and an active tennis club. In the centre of the village, we must mention the War Memorial which has just been cleaned and renovated. Church services for the Parish of Woolstone with Gotherington and Oxerton are St.Martin de Tour Woolstone, and St. John the Baptist at Oxenton.

For those buying a new home or with an existing garden Gotherington has an excellent Garden Centre. Not every village can boast a steam railway station, but Gotherington can, travelling from Cheltenham Racecourse, to Winchcombe, Toddington and Broadway, the gateway to the Cotswolds.
There is only so much we can mention surrounding Gotherington. Nearby, for classic car enthusiasts is the Prescott Hill Climb. In Winchcombe just six miles away lies Sudeley Castle and shopping. On the way to Tewkesbury just five miles away is the recently opened Cotswolds Designer Shopping Centre and in Tewkesbury the Abbey, the theatre, swimming pool and more shops. At Bishops Cleeve just three miles away there are all the essential shops for day to day living.
Towards Cheltenham five miles away lies Cheltenham Racecourse. Cheltenham itself is a Regency Town with all you would expect with excellent shopping, restaurants, theatres, entertainment and sport. Travelling west and only six miles away lies the Cotswolds.
You can see why all of us at Hayman-Joyce list Gotherington as an ideal place to own a home.

Guiting Power and Temple Guiting
For those people who want a more isolated village location with some great facilities, then Hayman-Joyce Broadway would have no hesitation in recommending Guiting Power. Located at the heart of the North Cotswolds in the upper reaches of the Windrush Valley, the village lies between Stow on the Wold and Winchcombe, with Bourton on the Water the nearest large village.
The village has two churches, a Village Hall, the Guiting Power Parochial Primary School, a village green, two pubs – The Farmers Arms and Hollow Bottom – the Old Post Office cafe, a bakers and grocers.
For over 50 years the village is the venue for the very popular annual nine day Music Festival. Nearby is Naunton Downs Golf Club and Adam Henson’s Rare Breeds Survival Farm Park.
The Village owes much of its development to the Guiting Power Amenity Trust.
Nearby is the much smaller village of Temple Guiting, famous for the Manor House and Barns , now a luxury hotel. The Manor House also runs a delightful cafe and gift shop in a nearby cottage. The village also has an excellent C of E primary school.
